Rope Swing/Swimming Hole on the Cahaba River

Where? This is in the Birmingham, Alabama area near Church of the Highlands on Grant’s Mill Rd. From I-459 take the Grant’s Mill Rd exit. You will see the Tom William’s car dealership immediately, regardless of which direction you are traveling. Pass the Tom Williams dealership on your right and follow Grant’s Mill Road until you come to a bridge with a pull out on the left side. There’s a small parking area with a paved trail that leads to the river. Many use this as a put-in/pull-out for kayaks. Follow the trail for about 1/4 mile and you will see a short trail to your left that leads down to the river. You walk across the river to access the rope swing.  Approx. coordinates to park Latitude: 33.5116 Longitude -86.6525 Or copy and paste 33.5116 -86.6525 into your maps. If you skip the “-” part in front of the 86, you’ll end up in China.

If you are traveling by boat, Once you pass under the bridge, you can’t miss the rope swing 1/4 mile down on your left.

Any other details? Every day during the summer this place sees traffic. It’s best to get there early, like 9am before it gets too crowded.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people who drink and smoke here and many of them seem to be underage. Yes, I realize I sound like an old lady when I say this, but please tell me WHAT it is about being in such a beautiful place that makes people want to smoke and drink? Take it to the house! I guess they can’t if they are underage. I digress…

Wear water shoes! While this place stays pretty picked up, there is some stray glass and you could easily cut your foot.

People bring their dogs and their dogs will shake the water off of their fur and it will get all over you whether you like it or not. Ask me how I know.

Consider bringing a bag to take out your trash and someone else’s. There’s always a stray pair of socks, cigarette butts, and bottle tops. Why does no one seem to think cigarette butts are litter?
