Where? Red Mountain Park is located at 2011 Frankfurt Drive Birmingham, Alabama 35211 Website: www.redmountainpark.org
Trail Length? It’s a 1500 acre park with many trails. At the time of this writing 10/26/19, they are remaking the map to add trails. There is someone at the start of the park passing out maps. The trails are mostly well-blazed and easy to follow, but some of the newer trails make it easy to get lost.
How hard are we talkin’? When you first enter the park, you take the path in front of you until you come to a fork. Take a sharp left and this is a flat path with trails that shoot off to the right and go uphill. If you continue on this flat path, it will eventually take you to some really cool mining remnants and also a mine with a really pretty entry way.
Any trail uphill is likely considered moderate. On my most recent trip to Red Mountain, we spent a couple of hours racing through the park to find certain objectives for a race and we logged 7 miles without hitting all of the objectives.
What else is there to do here? People ride their mountain bikes on these trails here and it seriously looks treacherous to me. They are working hard to get up those hills! There is also an adventure park with ziplines. These require a 24 hour notice and you must arrive in the parking lot 30 minutes or so before your appointed time.
Dogs: There is a pet park that allows you to bring your dog to play off leash, however you can take your dog on trails with you as long as you keep them on a leash.
**My favorite trail has trees growing through a series of old railroad tracks. It’s on the Smythe Trail.**
Random tips: Bug spray is a must during summer months. Another draw back is the red dirt you bring home with you. When it’s muddy, we get red mud everywhere.
